Facts About Church Hill in Downtown Richmond VA

Richmond Virginia was first visited by Captain Christopher Newport and Captain John Smith in 1607, but it wasn’t named Richmond until 1737. There is four hundred years of history attached to the region, but the area is not just about historical facts. Richmond has upscale shopping with more shopping centers per capita than any other city in the US, numerous sporting events, top restaurants, elegant homes, exciting culture, and many fun things to do. Richmond not only has the only Class IV rapids in an urban area, it also has the largest collection of Faberge art objects outside of Russia.

Church Hill is one of Richmond’s historic districts. This district includes the original land plat of the City of Richmond. It is known as the site where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in St. John's Episcopal Church and for Chimborazo Park, where the largest American Civil War Hospital was located. Church Hill is at the eastern end of Broad Street, a major east-west road in Richmond. Church Hill is the oldest intact neighborhoods in the city and contains the most antebellum structures in Richmond.
